Except for flying, those are very, very late game activities and do indeed fit the story and narrative, it isn't out of place in this high fantasy world.

…If anything, the fact that the OP is playing it for the first time and still saying that the beginning of the game makes him question the quality of the story and storytelling, AFTER the story changes in these upsates, is even more damning because it shows that whatever improvements they made aren't even good…
